National Championship Air Races
Navigating Turbulence at the Reno Air Races
The
Challenge
The National Championship Air Races in Reno is a cherished event with a rich history, but it comes with risks.. Over 57 years, it has seen 21 fatal crashes, including a major one in 2011. In 2022, tragedy struck again when a jet crash claimed a pilot’s life during the Gold Heat, drawing national attention. Our challenge was to manage the crisis transparently while protecting the event’s future.
The
Solution
Recognizing the potential for catastrophic events, we had previously developed an extensive crisis communications plan focused on honesty and transparency. Our approach was to maintain the trust of the audience by quickly controlling the narrative and providing clear, concise information to both internal and external stakeholders.
What We Did
After the crash, we swiftly executed our crisis plan—securing the media center, issuing a statement and holding a press conference within two hours. We managed media inquiries, provided updates, and kept stakeholders informed. Our strategy ensured accurate information, controlled the narrative and preserved the event’s integrity, reinforcing trust and strengthening future crisis preparedness.
